KB, MB and file size explained (and how to check it on your phone)
1 MB = 1024 KB. What KB and MB mean, how to see the size of a photo or PDF on Android, iPhone and Windows, and how to change it.
The basics
- 1 KB (kilobyte) ≈ 1,000 bytes (exactly 1,024).
- 1 MB (megabyte) = 1,024 KB.
- So 0.5 MB = 512 KB, and 2 MB = 2,048 KB.
Check the size
- Android: Files app → long-press the file → Details / Info.
- iPhone: Files app → long-press → Get Info.
- Windows: right-click the file → Properties.
Change the size
To make a photo smaller use Compress image; for a PDF use Compress PDF. Both let you type the exact KB.
