How to reduce PDF size for online forms (100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB)

Exam and government portals often reject PDFs that are too big. Learn why PDFs are large, how to bring them under 100 KB or 200 KB, and how to keep the text sharp.

Why your PDF is too big

Most large PDFs are large because of pictures: a phone photo of a page can be 3–5 MB on its own, and a PDF made from five such photos easily crosses 15 MB. Typed text takes very little space — a full page of text is usually under 20 KB.

So the trick is to make the pictures inside the PDF smaller while leaving the text alone.

The quick way

  • Open Compress PDF and choose your file.
  • Type the size the form asks for, for example 100 (KB).
  • Download the result. It is never bigger than the number you typed.

How small can a PDF go?

A one-page scanned certificate usually fits in 50–150 KB and still reads clearly. A 10-page scan can be squeezed into 300–500 KB. If you ask for a very small size for many pages, the pictures have to become blurry — ClerkCam warns you before that happens and suggests the smallest size where text stays sharp.

Tips that save the most space

  • Scan in black & white or grayscale if colour is not needed — it can halve the size.
  • Crop away the table or background around the paper before making the PDF.
  • Remove pages you do not need (blank backs, instruction pages).
  • If the PDF was made from photos, choose "Small file" quality when you create it.

The portal says the file is too SMALL

Some portals also have a minimum size (for example "between 100 KB and 500 KB"). Use Increase PDF size — it adds harmless empty space inside the file without changing any page.
