How to make a scanned PDF searchable (OCR in English and Hindi)

What OCR is, why scanned PDFs cannot be searched, and how to add a hidden text layer so Ctrl+F finds words — the pages look exactly the same.

Why you cannot search a scan

When you scan a page, the PDF only holds a picture of the letters. A computer sees dots, not words — so Ctrl+F finds nothing and you cannot copy a sentence.

What OCR does

OCR (optical character recognition) reads the letters in the picture and adds an invisible layer of real text exactly on top of them. The page looks the same, but now you can select, copy and search. ClerkCam reads English and Hindi (Devanagari).

How to do it

  • Open OCR PDF.
  • Choose the scanned PDF or a photo (up to 500 pages).
  • Wait while each page is read — you see the page number as it goes.
  • Download, open the PDF and press Ctrl+F to test.

For the best results

Scan at a good resolution, keep pages straight and avoid heavy shadows. Very small or handwritten text is harder to read.

Want an editable Word file?

After OCR, PDF to Word gives better results because the text is now real text.
